one winter afternoon<\/p>\n
(at the magical hour
\nwhen is becomes if)<\/p>\n
a bespangled clown
\nstanding on eighth street
\nhanded me a flower.<\/p>\n
Nobody,it’s safe
\nto say, observed him but<\/p>\n
myself;and why?because<\/p>\n
without any doubt he was
\nwhatever (first and last)<\/p>\n
mostpeople fear most:
\na mystery for which i’ve
\nno word except alive<\/p>\n
-that is,completely alert
\nand miraculously whole;<\/p>\n
with not merely a mind and a heart<\/p>\n
but unquestionably a soul-
\nby no means funereally hilarious<\/p>\n
(or otherwise democratic)
\nbut essentially poetic
\nor ethereally serious:<\/p>\n
a fine not a coarse clown
\n(no mob,but a person)<\/p>\n
and while never saying a word<\/p>\n
who was anything but dumb;
\nsince the silence of him<\/p>\n
self sang like a bird.
\nMostpeople have been heard
\nscreaming for international<\/p>\n
measures that render hell rational
\n-i thank heaven somebody’s crazy<\/p>\n
enough to give me a daisy<\/p>\n
